Pihka Is My Name, the Finnish electronic duo known for their captivating audiovisual universe, has released their latest single, "Station in Flames," showcasing their distinctive love and skillset within sound design. Comprised of composer-pianist Henna Helasvuo and producer-sound designer Lasse Turunen, this dynamic partnership continues to push boundaries with their unique blend of analogue synthesizers, hypnotic piano patterns, and crunchy drum machines.
The song's production is a testament to the duo's exceptional talent and attention to detail. Henna's live performance on a vintage synth, accompanied by Lasse's effects pedals, brings an undeniable liveliness to the synth soundscape. Additionally, the inclusion of Henna's brother, Artturi Aalto, adding a layer of moodyness with his cello, further enriches the track's atmospheric texture.
For those fortunate enough to witness Pihka Is My Name's live performances, their electrifying stage presence and seamless transitions between songs are a testament to their artistry. They effortlessly transport audiences into a world where reality and fantasy merge, leaving an indelible impression. Speaking on the new single, the duo explain:
We’d been wanting to see Jon Hopkins live for a while, and this year it finally happened! In a very inspired state, we wrote this distorted, hauntingly relentless beat. The synth line was written and performed live, with Henna on a vintage synth and Lasse on effects pedals. Henna’s brother Artturi Aalto played an additional layer of moodyness on his cello. On our gigs, Lasse’s emotional reverb-soaked falsetto is an important instrument, so we wanted to have some of it on the record as well. While we feel our synth sounds are very lively, it never hurts to have a human voice amidst them. The song is meditative and energetic at the same time."
