Detroit-based rapper, producer, and songwriter Illa J (born John Yancey) has forged his destiny on his own terms after the passing of his older brother, the legendary J Dilla (AKA Jay Dee). With an EP under his belt, Illa J is currently working on a full-length album and in the interim, he shares the visuals for his lead single "Not Ever" featuring Nottingham,UK singer Harleighblu. The off-beat soul-infused track produced by Illa J showcases his genre-bending production style in all its glory. Over the punchy drum grooves, bright synths and pulsating basslines, HarleighBlu delivers a soul-gripping performance with her commanding vocals and unapologetic songwriting that dwell on the potential dangers of the side chick.
The visual directed by Sarah Samira Yancey (Illa J's wife) follows HarleighBlu as she does all types of tricks to keep her man from being distracted by the world around him. With tight ropes and duct tape in hand, Harleighblu makes sure her man is secure, leading to some hilariously engaging moments. The visual was shot in Nevada and it also makes use of some performance shots of both Illa J and HarleighBlu with an appearance by Ty Healy as the gagged love interest.
