Born of a Martinican father and a Belgo-Congolese mother (internationally acclaimed Zap Mama), K.ZIA was raised amongst many cultures and has travelled the world of Music and Circus, during her childhood and teenage life. She moved to Berlin to pursue her musical career and released her debut EP RED in 2018. She now returns with her new single "Rise," which is a follow-up to her full-length album, Genesis which came out last year.
"Rise" is a cinematic piece that serves as a self-empowerment anthem in dark times. Backed by a sublime and slow-building backdrop made up of layered moody synths and swelling pads and anthemic drums, K.ZIA runs through the emotional turmoil that comes with daily pressures and eventually finds that inner spark that erupts into a crescendo. The record is as dynamic as they come and reaches critical mass around the two-minute mark when the 4-to-the-floor drums take precedence alongside K.ZIA's commanding vocals and soul-stirring harmonies.
The accompanying visuals make use of several visual motifs and set pieces that tap into the theme of the song. From the movement from dark to light mood boards, gaudy costumes and expressive choreography, viewers are beset by a stunning display of style and grace from the multi-faceted singer.
