Rising musician Pete Beat journeys through his recovery from mental illness on honest and intimate album Strange Museum, which evokes a sense of hope that we can we live a fulfilling, happy and peaceful life beyond our mental health struggles.
With the title of the album inspired by a psychiatric hospital he was detained in, the vivid and otherworldly production takes us through the most personal of experiences with a powerful combination of riveting lyrics and hypnotic funk and electronica-tinged soundscapes built on sweet piano keys, crisp drum percussions and intricate bass lines.
The album opens with "Another Galaxy," a poignant tune that immediately strikes an emotional chord as it explores the concept of not being able to help your close friends and family by resolving their issues. Other tracks like "When I'm Not Sleeping," and "Hard On Yourself," sheds light on Pete's struggles with schizophrenia, with standout single, "Sweet Elan," holding a special place in his heart as it unravels the story of unrequited love and centres around someone who could never capture the heart of their lover, losing them to another suitor.
Written eight years ago, the album is bold and uplifting in its attempts to describe Pete’s experience of arriving at the hospital, the build-up of his delusions, the diagnosis of schizophrenia throughout his life's ups and downs, and his journey to recovery, rooting itself in the solace and strength provided by his creativity and music.
Seeking to break the stigma surrounding mental illness, The Strange Museumleaves us with unbridled emotion softened by Pete’s silky vocals, soulful soundscapes and thought-provoking lyricism.
