Ever since his rise to fame in 2012 when he won MTV's Brand New for 2012 award, competing alongside Delilah, Michael Kiwanuka, Lana Del Rey, and Lianne La Havas, singer-songwriter and YouTube star Conor Maynard is as independent as they come and doesn't play along the industry lines and constraints. His debut album helped propel him further into the pop stratosphere and after a short hiatus, the young star returns with a brand-new record “If I Ever,” which explores his personal struggles with love. Inspired by a tumultuous breakup, Conor pours his all on wax as he uses music as a form of therapy to help me get through the tough times. The record has a warm funk vibe and bright pop elements that showcase his versatility as an artist who is willing to try new things. The Lyrics are honest, and reflective and explore the downside of losing one's better half and how life would completely change for them.
The video which Conor produced and directed himself explores trust and suspicion in relationships and the different outcomes that they each can lead to. Viewers get to see the two vastly different outcomes in a split-screen style. One is gloomy and shows Conor as an intruding and jealous boyfriend whose overzealousness became detrimental while the other scenario has a bright and happy aesthetic alluding to Conor being trusting and the result is a loving ever after. The video asks the question, is it better to live in blissful ignorance, or face the painful reality?
