Earthquake Lights venture into unfamiliar territory in ‘Desert Bloom’

Five-piece New York rock band Earthquake Lights have just dropped their sophomore album, Desert Bloom. Known for pushing boundaries, breaking down barriers and exploring the unknown, the new nine-track release sees the band doing just that. In fact, Desert Bloom may be some of their most experimental work to date, as they collide the worlds of alt rock and classical orchestral music to create something that is truly captivating.

Singer Myles Rodenhouse explains, “It is very much a record of deadlines and pushing our creative process forward. It was tough but really important and healthy for us because we found out a bit about ourselves and how we create.”

A lot of their album seems to be nature-oriented with song titles such as “Empty Sky,” “Snow” and “The Flood,” making appearances. “Another Star” on the other hand was inspired by the spacecraft Voyager and talks about how something once so prevalent can become forgotten. Title-track “Desert Bloom” is a warm, almost ballad-esque track, with organic instrumentation allowing for Rodenhouse’s soulful vocals to glide effortlessly. The easy, breezy track demonstrates how the band don’t need any unnecessary embellishments to spice up their sound. They have already perfected their recipe, and evidently it works very well.
