Merrick Winter's new single "Mr Resistor" showcases his unique musical identity that seamlessly blends singer-songwriter and indie pop with storytelling. Winter's upbringing in a small midwestern town surrounded by the Transcendental Meditation community of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi heavily influenced his musical interests, cementing his passion for music and storytelling. With a self-produced debut single and contributions to a charity record, Winter's musical career has been on a steep trajectory. He recently won support from Arts Council England to produce his highly anticipated debut album, set for release in late 2023.
"Mr Resistor" is a preview of what's to come from his upcoming album, and it doesn't disappoint. The song combines powerful distortion-infused guitar solos, easy-listening harmonies, and crystal-clear production, showcasing Winter's songwriting skills. The song has a contemporary twist while capturing the essence of the great tradition of tragic folk/pop ballads for someone who's been overlooked or ignored.
Speaking on the ideas and creation of the new single Merrick Winter writes, “In my head, ‘Mr Resistor’ has inadvertently become a little anthem for the cost of living. It’s one of the first character studies that I’ve written that immediately felt very honest. Lyrically, this song was a turning point – expressing humour and a perspective on the world as seen through a character. There’s this great tradition of tragic folk/pop ballads for someone who’s been overlooked or ignored – my mind jumps to McCartney’s ‘Eleanor Rigby’ or Paul Simon’s ‘Duncan’. I wanted to capture some of the essence of that tradition and throw in a contemporary twist.”
