Jazz trio Nite Bjuti muses on shared occurrences of becoming a woman in "Mood (Liberation Walk)"

Brooklyn-based female jazz trio Nite Bjuti refine thought-provoking lyrics and experimental sound into an intentional yet uniquely expansive song with “Mood (Liberation Walk)”. Singer-songwriter Candice Hoyes, bassist Mimi Jones, and Grammy-nominated soundchemist Val Jeanty lend their artistry to the single for a deep-cut sonic experience written about the transition from Black girlhood into Black womanhood.

“Mood (Liberation Walk)” begins with eerie soft, bell-like percussion, and a familiar keyboard riff as Candice Hoyes opens the track with an unsettling play on the childhood nursery rhyme “Miss Mary Mack ”. The song develops from a place of unexpected youth into an avant-garde metamorphosis on becoming a woman. Mimi Jones picks up as the single transforms with quick, plunging notes of bass over a frantic energetic beat. The song features a stream of consciousness or slam poetry inspired outro, musing on the stark transitions into womanhood. Hoyes chants, “I jumped into this body / I jumped into these curve / land on my feet – absorbing the shock.” “Mood (Liberation Walk)” uses experimental imagery to call upon common tropes of transformation and blur the lines of concrete with abstract sonics and freeform beats.

Since their debut in 2018 at the Lincoln Center, Nite Bjuti has stunned the New York jazz scene. They have played for venues such as the Nublu Jazz Fest, NYC Winter JazzFest, and The Schomburg Center. They have also received the UMEZ Arts Engagement Grant along with the NYC Women’s Fund in Jazz Music. “Mood (Liberation Walk)” is the precursor to their full-length album, which is set for release in April.
