The Queens rapper’s first single of the year contextualizes the very real fear of death while teasing what fans can expect from his upcoming album.

Deem spencer is a person first, and a rapper second. This sentiment always shined through the introspective choruses, childhood pictures as album covers, and relatable bars about his house plants. Spencer has always been defined by a subtle vulnerability. It’s consistently present in his style and delivery and that sense of open insecurity is reflected and explored in “27”.

Following the death of his grandfather and continuing to age and make art in a violent music industry, spencer tackles this fear of death while working through his own grief. The music industry is a violent one. With artists passing at young ages and labels profiting off of Black death, the fear of death itself is very real for artists such as Spencer; but Instead of drowning in the pit of emotion, Spencer embraces the desire to live over the oozing fear of death. 

There’s a lot to be fearful of, but the sense of fear is triumphed by the human spirit. 

Spencer contextualizes a mutually shared fear that’s present in the day-to-day lives of countless people his age. But with fear come’s freedom and Spencer is open to this emotion and embraces it instead of hiding. 

Accompanied by a sonically supporting instrumental and stunning vocal outro by DaVionne, spencer melds all musical elements into a track that explores this mutually shared fear while oozing a grandiose sensation of acceptance and optimism. 

The release of “27” comes with the announcement of deem spencer’s upcoming album adultSW!M to be released on March. 3rd via drink sum wtr.
