Singer-songwriter Bertie Newman, 22, was born and raised in Hackney, London. Bon Iver, Hozier, and Gregory Alan Isakov, among others, serve as strong inspiration, which blended with Bertie's own sound makes for a joyful and eclectic sonic experience.
His brand new, moving indie-pop song "I Will" is about change—the type of gradual adjustment you'd least anticipate while depressed and anxious.
Inseparably tranquil pop vocals, ambient reverb, and scalar guitar notes make up Newman's delicate compositions. To depict the subtle mood variations that make this such an engaging listen, he skillfully uses realistic images like "morning sun" and "cold and clouded sky." By juxtaposing softer periods of peace and his inner monologue with a hard-hitting, almost joyful chorus, Newman depicts the highs and lows of transformation authentically and with sincerity.
Bertie elaborates: “‘I Will’ explores the shift of my past preconceptions and associations with particular objects, places and people to how I feel now. I wanted to show the change in my mental state by making an ultimately happy and hopeful song, sound somber, just as I once felt.”
With a strong start with "I Will", 2023 is gearing up to be Bertie's year.
