Releasing his soundscape-like single is American-born, Southeast London-based songwriter and producer Merrick Winter, with "Veneer”. Written in the peak of the global Covid-19 pandemic, the new single comes as a product of collaboration between himself and co-producer Patrick James Fitzroy, whose credits include the latest releases from PVA, Sunnbrella, Sorry and Katy J Pearson.
Merrick's sound is a vividly clear product of his upbringing, being raised on a diverse range of music from Laurel Canyon, Irish folk music and RY Cooder, to create a unique blend of singer-songwriter and indie-pop. Speaking on the new single, Winter writes “We wrote out some ground rules for this EP in a pub as I remember, one of which was to be hyper-intentional with each recorded element; to not take shortcuts in the box – 90 percent of what you hear is from analogue sources – a lot of space-echo feedback and tape printing.”
"Veneer" is a stunning, emotive piece of electronica-tinged folk that draws on influences from across the spectrum.
"Veneer" by Merrick Winter is out now on all streaming platforms.
