New Jersey musician Christina Ward stirs feelings of nostalgia and renewal within us with debut EP Calendar, touching upon themes of heartbreak and redemption across seven soulful tracks about starting over in life.
Opening with haunting, airy stylings of title track “Calendar,” the distorted melodies move into the echoing, bass-laden beats of “Alone,” and “Time.” While penultimate track “Hiding,” is a folksy blend of her sweet voice and acoustic instrumentation that stretches through to closing number “Costumes.”
The EP which combines acoustic guitars, spaced-out synthesizers, hypnotic melodies and deeply personal lyricism takes us through an introspective daydream, framed by vulnerability and hope in equal amounts. Drawn from her own personal experiences, with a majority of the record created while Ward was going through a divorce, encapsulating the feeling of starting from scratch in life.
Speaking of the intimate body of work, she says, “This album has much to do with starting over. Having fallen in love with someone and knowing it won’t ever really work out. But as with everything I write, it’s a mix of things past and present. Realizing a lesson I should have already learned is coming around again, full circle. Hoping that maybe I’ll get it right one of these days.”
The rising singer-songwriter who has been making a name for herself since 2000 with the release of a string of singles has continued honing her skills with each release wrapped up in her emotive blend of electronic infused psychedelic folk. Consistently growing her fanbase and embedding herself in Jersey’s music scene, Christina Ward is an act brimming with potential.
