Roisin Quinn is an independent artist living, working and raising two small children in Harlow, Essex. She released her debut EP in 2019 and followed that with a feature on the Emmy Award 2020-winning documentary "The Nightcrawlers". Now she returns with her debut album, Concrete and Trees, a 14 track body of work that dwells on being authentic to one's true self in a world where putting on masks and filters are the norms. Roisin is fully hands on with her craft as he wrote, recorded and produced the entire project herself.
The project opens up with "Prelude", an instrumental introduction showcasing the singer's prowess on the piano. The somber keys and slow progression paints a reflective and lovelorn vibe which slowly transitions into the title track. The title track is as solemn as they come and we see Roisin painting a vivid detail of the life around her and the various characters and their swirling emotions that engulf them. The intricate production is layered with lush guitar plucks, rumbling piano progressions, subtle vocal hums and moody strings.
Next up is "All I Need"—a sublime track that blends rich piano progressions with lush guitar riffs and soft drum grooves that are underpinned by Roisin's sultry melodic runs. The track dwells on what she needs from her lover which includes emotional support and tender loving. Tracks like "Falling" and "Running From Yourself" displays her versatility as a genre-bending artist. The former is a play on the seasons and how her heart keeps her in a loop when love and heartbreak collide while the latter's looming piano riff takes precedence alongside her distinct Essex-tinged vocals and lovelorn lyrics.
The project closes out with the haunting "Don't Look Down" made up of moody basslines and moody textures that weave in and out with off-kilter sound design. Roisin muses on the ups and downs of life and how each experience was a chance for her to grow into her true self.
