Berlin-based brothers Leo and Rafa, Aka TWO LANES, are an electronic duo that are often known for their seamless efforts to blend acoustic piano recordings with analogue synthesizers and minimal beats in a particularly elegant fashion. Raised in a musical household their musical interests had differences, with Leo having a heavy interest in piano and Rafa having an interest in electronic music. Their latest single "Belong" is a heavy-handed and deeply emotional release that's a product of their impeccable ability to bind their different music interests.
Their latest EP Reflections explored a variety of genres including neoclassical, ambient and melodic techno – elements that can be found throughout the latest single "Belong" with its warming piano chords, arpeggiated synths and steady drum rhythms. The structure and arrangement throughout add to this melodic techno feeling, which is seasoned with distant harmony like vocal samples and subtle piano stabs.
Speaking on their new release TWO LANES write, “With our new track‚ “Belong” we wanted to combine acoustic instruments such as the piano and strings with synthesizers and electronic beat elements. We wrote the vocals with our dear friend James Hersey at our studio here in Berlin. Lyrically the song reflects on the urge to find the right place in life where one belongs. We recorded the strings with a string player at Funkhaus Berlin. During the session we experimented with different instruments, microphones and bowing techniques to achieve a variety of sounds and a unique tone”.
