Danny Brown has returned with a new self-produced single, titled "Winter", which has been released as a SoundCloud exclusive. His first solo offering since his 2019 album uknowwhatimsayin, the track was first teased on comedians Tom Segura and Christina Pazsitzky's Your Mom's House podcast. While he has been busy releasing some stellar music with his Bruiser Brigade collective, as well as hosting his own podcast The Danny Brown Show, "Winter" marks a strong solo return for Brown. The anticipation for his forthcoming album Quaranta remains high, although Brown himself has stated that "Winter" will not appear on the record, and does not act as a single for the album.
"Winter" contains ominous, insidious production and rapid flows might remind some listeners of his XXX days, with Brown sounding as fierce and engrossing as ever on the mic here. Weaving dynamic rhyme patterns together at a blistering speed, while underscored by dark, winding samples and cathartic, hard-hitting percussion and 808s, "Winter" grips the listener with its foreboding atmosphere and does not let go until the end of the song's two and a half minute run time.
The latest from the ever-influential Danny Brown, "Winter" makes for a compelling solo return. While it will not appear on his upcoming album Quaranta, the single has certainly whetted our appetite for more music from him, and it has us excited for the upcoming full-length LP nonetheless.
