19-year-old Kildare native Nell Mescal has shared her poetic new single "Graduating." Rife with emotive tones and a fluidity that draws you in with its free-flowing tenderness, the single is a personal recollection of mixed feelings.
Taking the pandemic as a sign to start her music career, Nell's early years of performing in choirs and writing songs proved to be a great starting point. Writing "Graduating" in an hour whilst in bed, the track feels homely, like a safe space to talk about things and how sometimes our reactions aren't what they're expected to be. "It felt genuinely real and very much me, because I was alone on the piano for that hour, just needing to vent," she explains. "It just felt right to release this song; it's so important to me and a little bit scary because it's quite personal."
Blending intimate sounds with evocative vocals, Nell's voice narrates the mix of pain and honesty that runs through "Graduating." Seeking a silver lining to the heartache of navigating through situations that could have been prettier, the single proves to be an acknowledgement of the past while looking brightly towards the future. "The song is about feeling like you're supposed to be sad about something but you're not. Then feeling a little bit angry, I suppose and trying to turn that anger into something a little less all-consuming. Just wishing that some experiences were nice," says Nell.
Despite being her first official release, "Graduating" proves that Nell Mescal is a wise songwriter whose talents should be championed. The future looks sparkling for this young artist.
