The Native reflect on addiction on "20 Something" [Video]

Recently signed to This Feeling, Plymouth five-piece The Native release another rising track with "20 Something." Weighted with hefty themes of addiction, the single navigates through the eyes of someone who only lives for the weekend and its opportunities for escapism.

Most of us are aware that 9-5s suck, the working week is tiresome, boring, but remains a means to an end. Yet when the weekends finally arrive, we splash out on anything that can help us escape the mundanities of reality, all before crashing back down to earth ready to start again on Monday morning.

For The Native, "20 Something," is a reminder of the downward spiral these behaviours can cause, and their impact on our lives. "This song is about a person who is ruining their life with addiction," explains frontman Charlie Noordewier. "It started as self medicating at weekends trying to escape from their job and slowly declined into more drink and drugs. They’re working a hard job all week and then blowing all their cash at the weekend to distract themselves from their unhappiness – rather than escaping from the rut they have created."

Underlining these emotions with a hearty bassline, colossal but earthy drum crashes and guitars that coil into a repetitive loop of angst, "20 Something," may be one of the band's most reflective tracks yet. Harnessing their voices and figuring out what they want to say with their music, the indie quintet are far from your throwaway-couple-of-hits band who lose relevance in a few years. Returning to our ears with a fresh perspective and vocalising issues that are not only relatable but often overlooked, the single proves that these guys are confident in what they have to say: they're here for a long time.

Set to play a huge number of festivals across the summer including Truck Festival, Leopallooza and Reading & Leeds, The Native are quickly becoming the ones to watch at festivals all over the UK. An indie band for the modern ages, The Native are your up and comers with an edge.
