Bay Area songwriter and all-around synth-pop fanatic Magsy drops his debut EP Brite Nite' and it sounds like an '80s pastiche wet dream, with a glorious element of pop songwriting coursing throughout. We've been fans of the up-and-coming songwriter since he dropped "Noisy Mind" and the new EP does not disappoint. It's a journey through unbeatable pop sensibilities with a production that's rich in Moog, Roland and Yamaha classic synth sounds. Think The Weeknd without the major label marketing budget.
An all-around creative, Magsy is involved with all elements of his art and has managed to carve a musical journey from humble roots. Unlike many artists in the mainstream pop sound, Magsy's background is strictly working-class, having a strong work ethic that's carried on through his musical journey, as he explains "Funny enough, I think that my jobs in construction have made me a better musician as I believe my two hands are just as capable as any. As an indie artist, I’m asked to fill a lot of roles when creating and releasing music. Making TikToks and marketing myself brought me back to the first time my father handed me a power tool while balancing on a ladder."
The EP starts with a bang on the breakout track 'Noisy Mind', an upbeat electronic bop with hints of nu-disco throughout and an irresistible groove. On "Midnight Blue" we go fully eighties, with the high tempo drum groove reminding us of a "Take on Me" style beat. There's a feel-good, no apologies piece of pop cheese on "Favourite Feeling" before the standout track from the release "Truth Is", a soulful piece of emotive pop build around thick, 80's synth pads.
The EP showcases a real diamond in the rough kind of artist – There's a lot of music out there right now looking to borrow an essence from the '80s style of production, but few that are nailing it quote as well as Magsy.
