New York born and bred, Los Angeles based singer/songwriter Skylet Gunner crafts whimsical psych pop that is raw and riveting. Her latest single "Freak Show Beauty" is off of her upcoming debut EP Serpent Soul which highlights themes such as empowerment, introspection and finding romantic love.
In "Freak Show Beauty" Skylet Gunner explores seeing beauty in our faults and finding a romantic partner "whose scars complement our own", she confides. With lyrics including "I'm a freak show beauty / a little damaged, a little lost / a little nasty, wasted or not / a little baggage, another shot / keep it nasty, tearin’ it up," Gunner sings to her love the ugly qualities about herself. Even though she knows she is damaged, she embraces her vulnerability and imperfect side, telling her lover they must do the same. "Freak Show Beauty" is the ultimate anthem of acceptance. Sonically, the single showcases hushed seductive vocals over bright guitar riffs and psychedelic-dipped rock soundscapes. The track is reminiscent of Lana Del Rey meets The Velvet Underground, with dark pop melodies and frantic bass riffs further highlighting the song's message of finding beauty in the darkness.
Skylet Gunner began releasing music under her own name in 2020, The musician, singer and songwriter is no stranger to the music industry though, often writing for other artists and landing placements on various TV shows and films. The multidimensional performer also took the stage as Amy Winehouse in the musical entitled 27. Her own music takes influences from the vast life experiences she has had including almost dying three times and a desert spiritual journey she took recently which lead to heavy introspection and self empowerment. Take a listen to "Freak Show Beauty" now and remember we are all scary and beautiful.
