Escape into an alternate reality with Sun Atlas' "Phantom"

Who is Sun Atlas? No one really knows. Gorgeously cinematic, cryptic, and delightfully alluring, this experimental mystery ensemble really enjoys keeping listeners on their toes.

Returning with their latest single "Phantom", just one highlight from their new self-titled ten-track instrumental album, fans should gear up for another interesting ride. The song, which personally reminds me of being in a video arcade or journeying through the desert in a lost or forgotten time, is a signature of the artists, who are recognized for their sound which is interpreted in a highly personal and unsuspecting way. Like an opening of the imagination and a lifting of the veil, the clever composition immerses the listener in bright guitars, Ethiopian-inspired drums and jazz-infused psychedelic soundscapes, resulting in a glorious escape from the daily mundane. The eclectic and world music-inspired nature of the sounds showcases the artists' otherworldly and evolved state of musicianship and commitment to exploring their craft in meaningful and unorthodox ways.

According to the press release, “little is known about the ensemble that is Sun Atlas. It’s not certain whether you’d find them in Los Angeles, New York, Addis Ababa, Marrakesh or in outer space. Maybe none, maybe all of the above. Their only proof of existence is banned on this 45. Their razor-sharp mixture of afrobeat, Ethiojazz, surf, cinematic soul, crime jazz & funk/hip-hop breaks speaks for itself.”

Listen to "Phantom" by Sun Atlas and dive headfirst into a dreamlike trance.
