New Zealand based dark pop meets electronic artist Michèle Ducray has just unveiled her latest single"Manifesto," only the second release from this rising artist who is a well known festival performer in her homeland.
In "Manifesto," Ducray paints a morbid scene of a male killer trying to intimidate and assault a female date. Even though he is relentless, the woman is able to fight him off, making him her victim instead. "Feel him creeping in the window / poisoned by the black widow / beats you up and hunts you down/ take everything you have and steal it back," she sings. "Manifesto" is a societal feminine-power driven track that shows women can bite back, especially when under threat. The colorful and eccentric visuals further tell the thrilling story with fast paced editing and blurred shots highlighting the anxious feeling of being hunted. "Manifesto" thrills with spellbinding layered vocals over moody beats and shimmery synths. The track is full of intrigue highlighting elements of both sonically light and dark moments.
Michèle Ducray had an interesting childhood to say the least. Raised in both South Africa and China as a child and then moving to New Zealand as a teen, the artist draws from her rich cultural upbringing. Further influenced by circus life, fantasy and true crime, Ducray highlights oftentimes existential themes through wild narratives in her music. She has performed at well known festivals in New Zealand, including Rolling Meadows, Soundsplash and Electric Avenue.
