Bulgarian-born and now New York City based singer/songwriter Ruth Koleva crafts shimmering pop music with heart and soul. Her latest single "Kiss My Attitude" is the fourth release this year from the prolific artist.
"Kiss My Attitude" is an unapologetic and fearless message of being yourself and going after what you want despite adversity. With lyrics pronouncing how "they try to tell me no/ I try to prove them wrong/ they grow up hearing ugly and boring lies/ gotta keep your head up/ don't care what they say',' Koleva reminds listeners of the importance of inner confidence and self expression as well as not caring much about what others think.
"Kiss My Attitude" is an autobiographical narrative of the singer's geographical discrimination she experienced in Amsterdam, confiding "people would ask me where I'm from they didn't assume I come from Eastern Europe, because I don't have an accent in English, so whenever I said 'Bulgaria' people would make this grossed out face and feel repulsed. I ended up having to defend my heritage on a daily basis and felt lonelier and more isolated than ever before." With nostalgic '90s influenced pop soundscapes, soul-drenched vocals and an arena worthy chorus, "Kiss My Attitude" is the ultimate anthem of embracing your own self worth.
Born in Bulgaria to an olympian father, Ruth Koleva moved throughout her childhood, living in countries such as India, Thailand, and Bahrain. Without a mother and separated from her brother, a young Koleva found solace and inspiration in music. Influenced by genres including R&B, Jazz, pop and even drum and bass, Ruth Koleva crafts her own genre-deying cinematic sound. The artist is a well known celebrity in Bulgaria and tastemakers like Mark Ronson are well known fans.
Take a listen to "Kiss My Attitude" now and remember how special you truly are.
