Toronto-based singer-songwriter Essa Alexis started out as a classically trained vocalist and was a member of two Canadian Opera Company productions, before finding her true voice in the neo-soul genre. One can say she has amassed her 10,000 hours way before now and her foray into secular music is seamless. Her vocals are soft and exude a slightly airy texture that is quite soothing and relaxing as displayed on her new release titled "Garden." The heartwarming ballad dives into finding inner light during a time of loneliness and mental turmoil. Backed by just a soul-stirring piano arrangement, Alexis' entrancing vocals hold sway with each harmonized line and inflection that ebbs and flows as the song progresses. She adds that the song was birthed during a tough time in her life when she was close to graduating and felt lost and needed something to assuage her feelings.
The accompanying music video has a DIY feel highlighting the warm undertones of the track. It strays from unnecessary visual effects and maintains an organic level of intimacy from the performance shots to the still cut -scenes of Alexis.
Essa recently graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in Vocal Jazz Performance.
