Singer-songwriter Teagan Johnston drops wistful production “Blue Monday”—a deeply personal slice of dark-pop detailing the heart-wrenching events culminating in a breakup. The emotive piano-ballad allows Johnston’s husky vocals to shine as layers of haunting instrumental swirl together to bloom as an introspective tale.
Rooted in the pain of asking someone to stay with you even as the relationship unravels, the delicate track touches on intimate themes of drug addiction and loss of a partner. With Johnston quiet vocals backdropped by swelling pianos, “Blue Monday,” feels foreboding and soothing all at once as the singer-songwriter reveals an ability to combine her own experiences with simple stories that happen around her.
Bringing narratives alive with poetic lyrics like “Cut into me like a Blue Monday midnight driver,” Johnston draws from a carjacking that took place near her apartment while she was going through her break-up. She explains the connection she imagined between the events, “I imagined the victim of the carjacking sympathizing with the carjackers' need to “just get away” as I was with my partners' need to leave our relationship.”
Already having established her former musical identity of Little Coyote, Johnston starts anew with music teeming with vulnerability. From her debut in 2017 to now on “Blue Monday,” Johnston’s gentle, contemplative sonic journeys have managed to travel from her heart to ours as she leads us toward her debut full-length project.
