Zambian musician Jay Trigga drops groovy debut EP Lover Boy, a collection of five Afro fusion tracks swirling with emotion and catchy soundscapes. Led by his rich vocals and feel-good afro-inspired rhythms, Trigga gives us a glimpse of his sonic versatility and what we can expect from his future debut album.
Rooted in the message that “love is universal,” Lover Boy is a short but sweet soundtrack for the lovers around the world, crafted carefully around a delicate combination of soft yet lush instrumentals and witty lyricism. Opening with gentle, slow-build offering “High Voltage,” Trigga immediately establishes the earworm quality of his sound with his hazy vocals layered over a synth-infused Afro-pop soundscape.
Next track “Belema” moves away from the honeyed sensibilities of the first track into upbeat Afro-dance stylings, drenched with catchy beats and Trigga’s punchy delivery. Softer, romantic offering “Special Somebody,” featuring husky vocals from Cjayy Prime slows things down once again with echoey, woozy sonics which give away to the fierce confidence of rhythm-led final track “Jump and Twist.”
At only 22, Trigga showcases a mature ability to shrug of sonic boundaries, coloring his intricate sing-a-long music with ranges of emotions and the authenticity of his Zambian roots. Having made a name for himself with local and international collaborations with the likes of award-winning Nigerian hip-hop act and actor Ice Prince Zamani and rapper Dremo of Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), the rising act carves a space for himself in Zambia’s Afro fusion scene – with the EP providing us a good idea of the up-tempo music we can expect from his debut album.
