Orange County, California-based indie pop artist Gal Musette is known for her evocative and contemplative songwriting style, which showcases an intriguing blend of baroque pop and indie flavored melodies intertwined with tender vocals and classically trained piano. The singer/songwriter just released a new video for one of my favorite tracks entitled “Julia.” The song itself is a dedication to her beloved sister, reflecting on the sacred bond that she has for her siblings and family.
In the visuals for “Julia,” Gal takes the song’s concept to a whole new meaning, that which is textured in sadness, isolation and dark shades of blue that give off a feeling of coldness and longing. Musette confides that the visuals offer "a desolate ghost story about a woman who finds pleasure in her melancholy and loneliness while she looks for and finds play with a woman who may or may not be her, another woman, or exist as a physical being at all."
In the video’s narrative, she is seen all alone on an overcast and desolate beach, decorated in a dark blue cape and a mystifying head ornament, while playing in the natural world and with objects on the beach, while going through the troubling emotions associated with her alienation. Although the video feels dark, you can’t help but feel a deep sense of passion and loss associated with the character and wonder if this has any connection to her sister Julia.
Gal Musette is a singer/songwriter and classically trained pianist who began writing compositions at just 10 years old. She most recently collaborated with legend Rufus Wainwright and has toured with acclaimed artists such as The Magnetic Fields and Donavon Frankenreiter. “Julia” is off of her upcoming debut album Backwards Lullaby.
