Swagged-out singer and actor Butterfly Ali returns with his new EP Preacher's Kid— a 5-track body of work that explores funk, soul, Gospel with a modern-day Gospel twist. The genre-fusing act first enthralled us with the retro-cinematic visuals for his single "Pray For Em" a while back and now he shows us his full strength on this project which explores love, life, and all the weird dynamics that come along with being different.
The project opens up on a high note with the anthemic "Testimony," a rousing record with driving keys, angelic choral section, and Ali's off-kilter high-pitched vocals. This is followed by the previously released laidback record "Pray for 'Em." The moody Rhodes-driven track "Truth Is" showcases Ali's vocal range, he is less animated and more emotional on this record with his sublime melodic runs and reflective lyrics on the state of affairs in the country. The title track has a bluesy, funky vibe and raises the tempo as expected. It serves as Ali's personal anthem and love for gaudy productions. His vocal performance is reminiscent of Prince as he switches from low to high pitched melodies and the extensive use of electric guitar stabs and dynamic drum grooves makes this track as eclectic as ever. He closes out the project with the feel-good jam "Ain't Ready For Me" that boldly brings to the fore Ali's unpredictable and dynamic musicality. There is so much to unwrap on this one from the uplifting lyrics, commanding vocal performance, lively arrangement that changes in energy as it progresses. In the end, Ali implores us to just keep what we do even though many may not be ready to accept it.
Preacher's Kid is short, powerful and a refreshing collection of eclectic sounds that only Butterfly Ali can bring.
