100 gecs spread anti-Christmas cheer on "sympathy 4 the grinch"

Experimental hyperpop duo 100 gecs, consisting of Dylan Brady and Laura Les, have spent the last year-and-a-half ruling the discourse of internet forums since their 2019 breakout at an online Minecraft music festival. Their debut studio album, 1000 Gecs, put them on the map for a lot of folks, and since then they’ve worked with the likes of Charli XCX, Fall Out Boy, and Rico Nasty. Now the duo take their newfound success and give it some Christmas cheer in "sympathy 4 the grinch."

There has never been a Christmas song like this. There are so many holiday songs that are pro-Santa, here is one about kidnapping him because you didn’t get what you wanted. 100 gecs are known for their over-the-top heavily distorted vocals, with seemingly-random samples scattered throughout their music, and this song contains all of it in a jolly jet-fueled jingle bash. The track contains the same “Pick it up!” sample as their 2019 hit “stupid horse” and a similar rhythm as well. Instead of being based around a racetrack, this time it’s a sleigh ride. Every part of this song: verse, chorus, after-chorus: is distinct, with its own instrumentation and vocal styling. It’s a lot to pack into 2 minutes and 11 seconds.

This probably won’t become a classic that schoolchildren will carol in 100 years from now, but 100 gecs’ new-aged inventive style is important to the scene, and it’s interesting to hear their take on holiday music. It’s a good song to play while driving around in the neighborhood looking at Christmas lights. In the film Elf (2003), the best way to spread Christmas cheer “is singing loud for all to hear,” and no one this holiday season is doing than 100 gecs.
