Hot on the heels of a joint mixtape with Kent Jamz. earlier this year, Compton-bred rapper Buddy has returned with a new single featuring Matt Ox. "Ain't Sweet" is the second in a handful of new collaborations from the RCA Records artist, following the Lucky Daye-assisted "Faces" in July. The single also follows Matt Ox's single "Beam Me Up," released in late June on Motown Records.
The track opens with a banjo instrumental that builds up to a booming chopped-up beat. "Ain't Sweet" revisits the affinity for catchy hooks that Buddy displayed on his 2018 debut Harlan & Alondra (see: "Shameless"). He also shows off his natural flair for head-turning flows as he raps, "Who want beef? / Got bread, got lettuce, got cheese." Matt Ox's guest verse is both assertive and energetic. Ox has previously dipped into screamo rap on tracks like "Kerwin Frost Scratch That" with 10k.Caash, but "Ain't Sweet" sees the 15-year-old emcee go all in.
Lyrically, the song is as aggressive as it is playful. Buddy's verses come off as cheeky and bursting with braggadocio, while Matt Ox's frenzied delivery serves as a reminder not to take their words lightly.
