While Sly5thAve has long been a highly sought-after collaborator with artists like Prince, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight and Janelle Monáe among others, his solo work has quickly been turning heads as of late. The Brooklyn-based producer and multi-instrumentalist has stepped out with impressive singles like “With You,” and “The Night," and returns this week with a new banger called “More Or Less” that features New York City rapper Marlon Craft. These releases are all part of his forthcoming album What It Is, due out September 18 on Tru Thoughts.
Sly5thAve shows his growing production prowess on the new track with a thumping beat and spacey synth harmonies. The dynamic instrumentals create a fitting foundation for Craft’s dexterous flow and pointed lyrics, which discuss communication, and lack thereof, in modern society. His poignant rapping commands the listener’s attention throughout, except perhaps for the brief saxophone break where Sly5thAve reminds us of his masterful skills on the horn. It's clear from "More Or Less" that Sly5thAve has a clear and original vision for his music that should make the upcoming project one to remember.
