The heyday of funk music may be behind us, but groups like Tuxedo are keeping the music alive and thriving today. Fresh off a tour of Asia and a new album this past summer called Tuxedo III, the duo of Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One are back with a pair of new singles that are ready to burn up dance floors. With their signature pristine style and guest spots from CeeLo Green and Tony! Toni! Toné!, the tracks “Own Thang” and “Get The Money” show that Tuxedo is at the height of its powers and the duo isn’t slowing down any time soon.
Keeping with the rich history of funk style, the two new tracks lean into the verve of life with inescapably vibrant grooves. CeeLo perhaps says it best in the opening of “Get The Money” when he declares, “It ain’t nothin’ but a party y’all!” The track continues with a churning beat, fiery horn lines and some exquisite harmonization of Green’s vocals. “Own Thang” is another banger with predictably remarkable vocals from the legendary group Tony! Toni! Toné! and some delectable interweaving synth lines in the instrumentals. It’s difficult to stop moving when listening to these two new singles from Tuxedo, proving that the vitality of funk is here to stay.
