HATE DRUGS ask to “Take A Look Around” at life on indie-pop gem

Indie-pop outfit HATE DRUGS arrive with “Take A Look Around,” their first single since their 2019 sophomore LP Tsunami Soul I. The Bakersfield, California based quintet moves along here in a comforting fashion supplying warm vocals, stirring guitars, and hooky arrangements. “Take A Look Around” is a part of an upcoming planned EP entitled 2014, an aptly titled record including songs written by the band that year that were never released.

Led by vocalist/guitarist David Caploe along with lead guitarist Norman Lee, bassist John Irwin, keyboardist Josiah Caploe and drummer Adrian Diaz, HATE DRUGS find themselves maturing both sonically and lyrically with “Take A Look Around.” It’s a song about the takeover of AI technology. HATE DRUGS offer a cautious reminder that’s there a big whole world out there and the time to disconnect yourself from technology is now. Beyond the narrative, the group’s charming productions, subtle yet absorbing composition, and Caploe’s attractive vocals allow HATE DRUGS to feel removed from their signature indie-pop/rock imprint and thrive unbound by genre. “The song is a call to action about living in an age where it’s almost hard to distinguish the artificial from the natural – not because AI has become so good at imitating us, but because we have become in many ways a reflection of them,” says Caploe.

HATE DRUGS started out by releasing a pair of EPs, 2015’s Anna Grahm. and 2016’s Beach Weekend. It was in 2017 when they dropped their debut LP Tsunami Soul II and followed it up earlier this year with the second record, Tsunami Soul I.
