Rogue D and long term partner Memoryman (AKA Uovo) have once again joined hands for another collaboration EP, aptly named Total Black. Encapsulating us in whirrs of darkness and seething enigma, the duo showcase yet another stellar addition to Crosstown Rebels' sub-label Rebellion.
"Knowing that Damian [Lazarus, founder of Crosstown Rebels] is a great lover of music in many of its facets, we made four different tracks with different combinations," Rogue D shares. "But each track has a common sound, that searches for mediation between new and old."
"Local Fiction" opens the compilation with pulsing undertones that slither into a reverberating call. As violin synths intertwine throughout, the duo form an eerie yet jovial ambiance for a truly spectacular number. Following "Local Friction is "Black Power," a fully dubbed out number that teeters into the minimal playing field of dance music whilst utilizing kicks to provide the perfect dance floor rhythm. On the other hand, "Tomorrow" rings softly with bells throughout, the plucking of guitar strings flickering in and out for another well-crafted ambiance. Lastly, rounding off the EP is "Late Night," in which we see the duo take on another minimal house vibe, flavoured with upbeat disco influences.
Rogue D has carved out an impressive path in the house and techno soundscape. As a solo artist, his tracks have been finding homes on Snatch! Records and Defected, whilst his collaborator, Memoryman (AKA Uovo), has been equally successful. As one half of renowned duo Pastaboys, Memoryman teamed up with Yoruba Records frontman Osunlade on 2014’s Rebirth, with the Deep Musique single later being remixed by Keinemusik affiliate Rampa, before producing the standout Kolo Kolo EP on Crosstown Rebels in 2018.
