Have an 'Epiphany' after listening to Ross From Friends' latest EP

UK’s Felix Clary Weatherall, the man we know as Ross From Friends, is back with another great EP featuring three dazzling cuts via Flying Lotus’ imprint, Brainfeeder. Known for his unique brand of lo-fi house skillfully blended with jazz, techno, and ambient, the Essex producer doesn’t disappoint with this latest record.

“Epiphany” opens things up with cathartic synths and angelic vocals, until a deep bassline and Middle Eastern guitar plucks take over, taking you on a journey out of the body and into the mind. Weatherall says that the inspiration for this particular track came from sci-fi movies. “I was watching a bunch of these films like The Thirteenth Floor, The Matrix, or Fifth Element, and I wanted the release to play on the idea of a desolate physical and social landscape becoming a utopia from a communal epiphany – or revolution.” The idea of transcending physical reality is a big one to explore, but Ross From Friends is a masterful guide on this internal voyage. Built around a vocal loop and soulful "mhmms," “The Revolution” boasts a disco house vibe. Lastly, “Phantom Ratio” kicks things up to 129BPM for a more spacey number that takes you to a whole different place. “I spent a lot of time making it sound like it could be played in a club,” Weather explains. “I wanted to challenge myself to make a weird club track with that one.”

This is Ross From Friends’ fourth release on Brainfeeder, following Aphelion EP, his full-length album Family Portrait, and two tracks on Brainfeeder X—a compilation that features various artists such as Mr. Oizo, Thundercat, Teebs, and Flying Lotus himself. The artwork for the EP is done by legendary pro skateboarder, entrepreneur, and artist Chad Muska.
