P-Lo is shining. He just released a new, 16-track album aptly titled SHINE in which he shows off both his ability to stick to his roots and grow as an artist. It's his most experimental project, but is still filled with plenty of bass-heavy bangers that leave no question as to if P-Lo knows his strengths.
He successfully toys with more soulful, winding sounds on tracks like "What It Takes" and the Bosko-assisted "Luh U." On these tracks, he can be heard messing with his vocals to craft a softer sound that is more steady and focused. This slow sound allows him to get more introspective, and he does this no better than on "All Falls Down." On "All Falls Down," P-Lo leaves an endless stream of reflective raps over a smooth instrumental with a soulful vibe. He uses a polished flow to spit about his dedication to getting where he is and the people who have helped get him there. P-Lo evidently values loyalty, genuine relationships, and seems to want the best for those around him.
Still, upbeat tracks like "Type Beat" are obvious highlights. On "Type Beat," P-Lo raps with a rich, energetic flow over a very Bay Area beat. Its hook hears him repeat the phrase "this ain't no type beat, bitch I get hyphy" as the listener is all but forced to enjoy themselves. The party-ready nature of "Type Beat" is reminiscent of some of P-Lo's biggest singles like "same squad" and "Put Me on Somethin'" and is sure to make the track a fan-favorite. SHINE is stocked full with personal tracks and bangers, showing the many sides to one of Northern California's most talented rapper/producers. Press play on the 16-track album up above.
