If I could use only one word to describe pop singer Riah, it would be: magnetic. On her latest EP Heartbreak Magic, the LA-based artist finds charming curiosity in love, life, and growing up.
At first glance, Heartbreak Magic reads like a teenager's diary. For example, "Prom" is a quiet track with deliberative lyrics: "Don't want to call / But I'm thinking about you." But at the heart of Riah's laid-back songwriting is her ability to express carefree naiveté. And she does so with the thoughtful depth that our teenage selves never had. "Growing Up" takes this lead, with the artist reflecting on personal change while others stay comfortable living in the past. Similarly, "Nice" takes dreamy regard with bumping into an ex-lover. Anchored in heartache and propelled by a light synth-pop beat, the song poignantly admits the joy she feels seeing a person she still cares for.
To record the EP, Riah stepped out of her home base of Los Angeles and traveled to Norman, Oklahoma. The magic captured on the EP is thanks to the songwriter's creative chemistry with producer Chad Copelin. "The first day I worked with Chad, it just felt so right and so natural," said Riah. "We have such different perspectives that every time we write together, we end up creating something that’s totally new and really pushes me as an artist."
