Zoe’s Shanghai is quickly establishing itself as a worthy torchbearer for heady and hearty soul music. The Barcelona-based four-piece just released their debut EP entitled A Mirage (Meant to last Forever), which is highlighted by the single “Liquid We.” The lush track has undeniable shades of Hiatus Kaiyote with its groovy beats, sophisticated harmonies, and thoughtful lyrics, yet Zoe’s Shanghai still manage to carve their own unique slice of musical goodness.
“Liquid We” is a journey through diverse musical terrain as lead singer Zoé Renié writes about pushing the limits of time and pondering immortality. She takes center stage at the song’s outset as the lyrics “All the time will never seem to be enough for me” float over warm bass lines from Alex Molas. Drummer Aurélien Landy and keyboardist Tomàs Fosch soon join the mix and the group collectively showcases astounding musicianship as the song traverses varying styles and emotional levels throughout, exhibiting the group’s ability to deliver complex music that sounds intuitive. The track closes with a particularly elastic vocal melody from Renié where she underscores the theme of inner turmoil: “A foot swallowed by my instant fear / and an arm fully stretched towards a goal so clear.” Zoe’s Shanghai may be new on the scene, but their expert skills and engaging sensibilities on A Mirage (Meant to last Forever) should result in widespread acclaim in no time.
