Lauv is trapped in dystopia on "Drugs & The Internet"

Prior to receiving his first top 40 Billboard Hot 100 placement with "I Like Me Better," Lauv was best known for the themes of insecurity and loneliness in relationships that appear on his 2015 Lost in the Light EP. "I Like Me Better" and "A Different Way," a collaboration with DJ Snake, introduced listeners to the singer's more confident, electro-pop dimension. His latest release, "Drugs & The Internet," confronts the singer's proximity to depression and emptiness through the lens of more salient concerns.

"I wrote it as a sort of self-analysis for my obsession with the way I wanted present myself to the world — a commentary on the world we live today. It is as much self-deprecating as it is serious and sad," Lauv said of the song in a press release. Many young listeners, like those in Lauv's demographic, are seeking out content from artists who have a platform to make statements bringing to light the subject matter that effects their generation the most, such as the toxicity of social media and substance abuse.

"Drugs & The Internet" was produced by Lauv, Johnny Simpson, and Jon Bellion. Lauv's voice is soft over simple piano chords when the track begins, only for this atmosphere to be distorted as he's sucked into a hazy incarnation of the internet. This portion of the song's music video is robotically dystopian. Lauv finds himself at a dinner table surrounded by fire and emotionless mannequins that make you feel as though you've watched the singer be lured into the Twilight Zone. The video's conclusion shows that perhaps you have watched this happen–it's just that you've done so through the lens of Lauv watching himself be captured in this dystopia, silently pleading for help.

"Drugs & The Internet" is the lead single from Lauv's long-awaited debut album ~how i’m feeling~. Tickets for his upcoming tour are available here.
