On the surface, Flaural is a Denver-based rock band that creates a cosmic array of psychedelic tangents and melodies that sway back and forth with a warm glow but once you begin to peel back the layers, the band's story is much deeper than a big hallucinogenic trip. Their new single, "1616" comes from a debut LP three years in the making. Aptly titled Postponement, Flaural battled through personal hardships to bring this odyssey to life.
Flaural showed up on the scene back in 2015 with their debut EP Thin King and dropped the follow-up Over Imaginary Cigarettes a year later. Afterward, the band retreated into the studio with James Barrone (Beach House, Tennis) to further explore the spaced-out sound they had been honing in. They aimed to polish their ethereal art-pop songwriting and flesh out experimental ideas.
Everything changed on March 27, 2017, when frontman Colin Johnson's father passed away from ALS. From then on, the band's goal was to complete their debut record in his name. The result is an inspired sound filled with innovation and melancholy. "1616" launches in like a jet airliner and never looks back. The bed of synths and syncopated rhythms give the track unwavering energy that feels like the aural sensation of riding Space Mountain. Coupled with eye-popping visuals, "1616" is a dynamite example of what this band is capable of.
Keep an eye out for Flaural's debut album Postponement out April 19th on Staycation Records.
