Perspectives can be hard to get across or acknowledge as a human. Penned from a delicate stance of a hopeful mind, the latest from Highland Kites strips the sense of our mortal veneer for an intimate display. Formerly from Los Angeles and now residing in Nashville, singer-songwriter Marissa Lamar and drummer Neil Briggs track a rather dark take of unveiling emotions on "The Inside," which sway from a remorseful tone to an ascension of relief.

The result is a stirring blend of deep indie, pulling characteristics of folk, alternative rock, and dream-pop. Lamar's cadence murmurs with a heartfelt notion, explaining that the track is a nod at her not being able to express who she is, or how much she truly loves a person, further explaining, "It's really about appearance vs. who we really are and what we all have pent up inside that we wish we could perfectly express."

Expanding an open-ended fantasy, the sonic overlays protrude the opening of the track. Lamar's light and dreamy contralto reimagine a typical ethereal soundscape for a lusher tone and dance around hopeful lines: "See how beautiful the world is, I built for you and me / If you could only look on the inside." Briggs' heavy and resound drumming near toward a climatic rebuttal, complementing Lamar's vocals, but never break out from his sturdy climb. The finishing touches are given by a melodic and moody guitar that revisit this vision that Lamar wishes for all to see.

Thematically personal and wavering a sense of caressing past wounds, the cathartic and developed display on "The Inside" can only speak to a more focused mindset for future releases. "The Inside" is taken off the duo's upcoming EP which is being released track by track throughout the next five weeks.
