The forthcoming compilation from Brainfeeder figures to be one for the ages. The L.A.-based record label, which was founded by Flying Lotus, is celebrating its tenth anniversary with Brainfeeder X, a 36-track collection that will showcase the past, present, and future of the eclectic label. There have been teasers of new music from Thundercat, BADBADNOTGOOD, and Brandon Coleman, but the latest is a remix of a song from Thundercat’s 2017 album Drunk. Fellow Brainfeeder artist Ross from Friends takes the reigns behind the boards for a spaced out reworking of the tune “Friend Zone.”
In the remix, Ross from Friends chops up the original version of the song to almost unrecognizable levels. Thundercat’s hook vocals are one of the only elements tethering the remix to the original, as they flow in and out of a sea of pads and various electronic effects. The track is quirky and unpredictable but never stops grooving, a true mark of the Brainfeeder musical brand.
Brainfeeder X will be released on November 16 and will feature other Brainfeeder artists like Teebs, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Lapalux, and many more. There will also be a release show on December 15 at London’s O2 Academy Brixton with many special guests and a new 3D experience.
