The first year or so following the release of his debut solo project, Mind of Mine, was marked by various highs for ZAYN. The album included his first musical release after departing from One Direction, "Pillowtalk," which debuted at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. "Pillowtalk" is the R&B singer's second most successful single, following his 2017 collaboration with Taylor Swift, "I Don't Wanna Live Forever," with "Dusk Till Dawn" featuring Sia not far behind the two. While these tracks may be chart leaders, ZAYN has released a number of other singles recently that simply haven't been as impactful. It appeared for a moment that he was possibly losing his grip on his solo success, and possibly easing into a sophomore slump as thoughts of the whereabouts of his follow up album swirled around the internet. ZAYN's latest single, "Fingers," is reassuring and promising of the singer working to secure his place in the music libraries of many.
"Fingers" was written with and produced by production duo Saltwives, consisting of Alex Oriet and David Phelan, who ZAYN worked closely within the process of creating Mind of Mine. ZAYN's sultry and somewhat boastful tone, which has become classic and recognizable trademark of his sound, is rich on the track, but without the aura of mystery that usually accompanies it. Instead, we're allowed a peek inside of the more honest and pleading side of the singer, presenting him in an almost vulnerable way.
Oriet and Phelan's production draws on both pop and electronic influences, fitting the track for mainstream consumption without allowing the sound to be synonymous with the current sounds of the airwaves. These three musicians seem to be a trio fit for hit making, and sticking together may be the best way to land ZAYN his second number one album.
