The last time we heard Ja Rule's name in the blogosphere was when he was getting roasted like a marshmallow in the litigative pits of his dumpster fire of a failed festival, Fyre. Today, however, his name resurfaces in a much more appropriate arena than event planning: music.
If you grew up in the 90's like me, you jammed out to Ja Rule's single "Always On Time" all the time (pun intended, please don't judge me). You sipped on Capri Sun and watched the angsty music video on MTV as your adolescent crush on Ashanti magnified tenfold. Almost nine years later, the single has received a dance pop makeover from Amsterdam production trio CHILDSPLAY, who tapped Dutch compatriot Cimo Fränkel for vocal duties. Out now via Universal and premiered exclusively by EARMILK, "Always" keeps the iconic lyrics of the original intact while flipping the arrangement on its head at a bouncy 104 BPM. With its DJ Snake-like moombah pop arrangement highlighted by crunchy trombones and expertly pitched vocal chops, "Always" is primed to be a streaming behemoth. It also serves as an excellent microcosm of the chemistry between DJ/producer and singer-songwriter, a phenomenon that becomes more and more prevalent with each passing day as dance music continues to pervade contemporary pop.
