BARQ will not be pigeonholed. The Dublin-based troupe seem to defy every genre even as they lean into them, and their latest single "Earthquakes" proves no different.
"Earthquakes" is mellow but also abrasive. Frontwoman Jess Kav brilliantly juxtaposes tenderness in her melody and her lyric with the group's characteristic dissonant guitar and funk-filled percussion. The track is a "soulful reflection on the breakdown of relationships, outlining how a platonic break-up can be just as painful as romantic disillusionment.” Their self-described "melty-rock/agrosoul" sees them weaving between rock, soul, hip hop rhythms and pop.
Sometimes the most original music is inexplicable, and BARQ certainly strive for originality—every member of this band is a masterful musician, their live performances can attest to this—but together, they produce a sound you won't hear from any other band on your radar. They are groundbreaking, and "Earthquakes" is an introductory testament to their potential.
