Funky future bass maestro Cofresi strikes a poignant chord on "Coldheart"

Boundary-pushing Chicago bass producer/drummer Cofresi reveals the second single off his forthcoming EP, the beautifully unexpected "Coldheart." The cerebral synthy cut goes above and beyond the typical future bass schtick, providing a truly evocative, all-encompassing sensory experience. A skilled drummer beyond his production chops, Cofresi's arrangement skills are at their best here. What a difference true knowledge of music theory can make in your work. It often feels like overbearing dance music feels the need to TELL us how to feel in a million different overt ways, rather than just sit back and let the music's poignant sonic subtleties speak for itself. Cofresi effortlessly pulls off the later on the heart-wrenching "Coldheart," which has touched me deeper and deeper with each subsequent listen. Vocalist Marcos Atom provides the perfect level of serene soul to accent Cofresi's punchy production, which slowly builds in a way that recalls the sweeping emotions cultivated by anthemic emo or even pop punk. Plucky strings and Cofresi's driving drums play into the big feels.

Catch Cofresi in your town this spring.
