Ghanaian born, Australia raised and based artist Genesis Owusu delivers his new single "Sideways" which is the first release from a five-track body of work. The percussion driven track is an eclectic mix of English, Twi and pidgin English. The niche production also adds to Genesis's unique vocal performance and style that is both experimental, relatable and somewhat groovy. The 19-year old's upcoming 'Cardrive' EP was put together in tandem with production from Simon Marvin and Perrin Moss from grammy-nominated hip-hop act Hiatus Kaiyote.
The song has a lot of significance for me personally, as both an artist and an African, as I progressively push my own sound further while also being able to proudly pay homage to a cultural foundation that hasn't always been correctly appreciated by people outside of it. I get to forward a sound and create my own product of Afrofuturism.”
Genesis’s family moved to Canberra in 2000, when he was two. “Being put in that situation automatically made me an outlier, which was something I quickly grew to accept and own,” he said in a recent interview. He has had explosive live sets at venues Groovin’ The Moo, Spilt Milk and St. Jerome’s Laneway.
