Just because the East Coast doesn't have palm trees lining their streets, that does not mean New Yorkers know nothing about good beachside music. Case and point, Asante Phenix and his just-add-(ocean)water ready track “Undercover.”
Without trying to go too crazy with the comparisons here, “Undercover” feels like a modern update of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince’s “Summertime.” In no way is that comment suggesting that Asante is the next Will Smith, it’s way too early to tell for that, but the sentiment of the songs are the same.
Like “Summertime,” “Undercover” follows on a perfect summer day, from posting by the pool, drinks and rap shows. Aside from lyrical content, the instrumentals put you in that summertime mood thanks to sharp groovy guitar riffs and Asante’s warm voice. We may be approaching the middle of August, but that doesn’t mean we should let summer so easily slip through our fingers!
