Growing up in the Koreatown area of Los Angeles, I've always a weird relationship with Venice & Santa Monica Beach. I was never that fond of the beach in general, but would still find myself wandering the endless boardwalks with friends and family quite often. The street performers, crowds of tourists from around the world, skating, board shops and restaurants were all pretty integral parts of my childhood. So it was kind of a surprise to a lot of people that I didn't know about the Abbot Kinney area of Venice until I got to college, when it was still becoming the strikingly-trendy yuppie shopping & eating spot that is today. From it's famous "Abbot Kinney First Friday" event where they turn the entire street into a food and music festival, to it's internationally known store fronts and affluent patrons, it has indeed become the destination to frequent on the West-side of LA.
The area seems to have also captured the heart of producer & singer Free (FKA Grandior) who has decided to release a heartfelt ode to the street titled "Abbot Kinney". In the song the producer sings of his adoration of an unnamed woman who he describes as "a golden lady/ a ray of light", who he often sees trotting through the area. It is one of the few instances of Free showcasing his own vocal talents over his own production, which is often a treat as the producer's voice holds a surprising amount of charm & range.
