Chicago’s Rich Jones is best known for slaying the rap game. When the Chicago Reader polled its audience for best hip-hop artist in the city, Jones came in second only to Chance The Rapper. However with the release of his new Vegas EP, Chicago’s finest is setting the pace for a dynamic year, busting out some sweet soulful melodies for the pop world. With rising Las Vegas producer Ryan Lofty stepping into the mix, Rich Jones is certainly doing Vegas right.
This release sees the flexibility of Rich Jones as an artist. Opening with the upbeat and playful “Out West,” the Vegas EP wastes no time leading us off to warm weather with its luscious synths and soaring melodies. The energy and upbeat nature make it easy to join in on this punchy, anthemic dance. “Everything” gets a little lovey-dovey with Jones’ soulful vocals and catchy piano pop. It shows more of the rapper’s soft side as he dips into singing about the heartache of a lost relationship. Despite being more tender and vulnerable, he track actually has a lot of cheery and bright moments, especially with the chorus.
“Déjà Vu” sees even more emotion coming to the mix. Taking a darker and mysterious turn, Jones taps into heavy 80s vibes and analog synths. This track is all about the simplicity of the production, allowing Jones’ vocals to shine over the classic-sounding piano line.

Vegas wouldn’t be complete without a closing party. “Trust Me” is probably the most addicting track on the EP. The vocals almost remind me of Caribou, with the cool, collected, yet dance-driven nature. Dancing along to this finale, we can definitely say we trust you Rich Jones. Hopefully this year sees much more of this soulful, pop side. Look for Jones' Vegas EP out now!
