Over my years writing about music, I’ve found that there is one major signifier that a cover or remix is awesome: it makes you fall in love with the song more than the original. That’s exactly what went down when River first dropped her cover of Ashanti’s “Foolish” this month. And after ten seconds of listening to the London’s vocalist’s take on the 2002 chart-topper, it immediately signaled the original’s flaws as an over-produced, cloudy hit with no commitment. Rivers, however, brings life into “Foolish,” with a strong vocal performance backed by just as soulful production.
This cover is released ahead of River’s debut original single, “Remember Me,” that is due out next month.
